How to Get Started in Marron Aquaculture
1. Join the Marron Growers Association of WA Inc.
2. Contact the Department of Fisheries by phone : 9482 7333 or on website: http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/ and look under Aquaculture.
3. Visit your local library and if necessary get help to look up information within Library & Information Service of WA (www.liswa.wa.gov.au). Topics to look for are: Aquaculture, Aquaculture Engineering, Marron, Yabbies, Redclaw, Cherax, Dam & Pond construction, and Water Quality.
If you read all that is in the system it will take you about a year or more.
Nevertheless, it is a lot cheaper and quicker in the long run to do the reading before spending your money incorrectly. Having to do things twice, ofetn means that you spend twice your budget.
4. Before employing any earthmoving contractor every potential marron farmer should read:
Nelson, K D Design and construction of small earth dams Inkata Press Melbourne
Also any serious grower or potential grower should read:
Boyd, Claude E.; Tucker C.S. 1998. Pond aquaculture water quality management. Kluwer Academic Boston :
5. It is also recommended that novices buy 1 to 3 aquaria with a plan area of about one square metre, obtain a few marron for each and spend as much spare time as possible studying them.
Unlike terrestrial animals it is not easy to see what is going on in aquaculture ponds.
Start small and grow Smart !!
